Area Tien An

Area Tien An is an open space in front that creates a grand and solemn appearance for Van Mieu, beginning with the Tu Tru (four large pillars) and two Ha Ma steles (dismount from horse) on either side.

The Tu Tru are built from brick, with the two central pillars standing taller, topped with two mythical lion-dog figures (nghe) facing inward. The two outer pillars feature bas-relief carvings of four phoenixes spreading their wings and joining their tails together in an elegant display.

The Ha Ma steles serve as a reminder that anyone passing through — whether high-ranking mandarins or commoners — must dismount from their horse as a sign of respect.

58 Quoc Tu Giam Street, Van Mieu Ward, Dong Da District, Hanoi.
